“The Shady Corner” by Matthew Williams is a horror/mystery/psychological thriller rolled into one darkly disturbing tale! I’ve read a lot of horror in my days, and while you can feel some influences here of some of the masters, Williams’s story feels original in its own way with the creation of the evil monster of David. The writing is very, very descriptive and we really feel like we are there watching this twisted and disturbing story unfold. Williams’s powerful, evocative word choices truly bring this terrifying character to life. Recommend for (mature) readers of horror and mystery/suspense.

I read Horror on occasion to switch it up, but more often than not I’m left feeling kind of ‘ho-hum’ about them… like the author TRIES to be ‘scary’ but it’s not. Okay… that was NOT the case with this book, “The Shady Corner”. YIKES!!! This is a book that will DEFINITELY give you nightmares! David is one of those characters that will be impossible to forget anytime soon. I will be looking forward to reading more books from Matthew Williams. Recommended reading for fans of horror novels with a dark psychological twist.

I could always picture everything (and everyone) perfectly. It did keep me engaged, and I liked Mr. Williams’s edgy and dark writing style very much, and found myself completely lost in this bizarre world and characters, from the ordinary and innocent, to the pure evil. I was surprised by the amount of emotion and investment Williams managed to pull from the reader in a story as dark as this one, and pack such a punch where we are often left with our jaws hanging open. Definitely had to close the book and step away and gather my wits more than once. Some scenes are VERY hard to take, yet you find yourself unable to quit. Sign of a gifted writer there.

I can and do highly recommend it. I appreciate the intelligent and dark complexity Matthew Williams uses in creating not only these fascinating and seriously disturbed characters, but seeing how they react to different, quite difficult, downright awful and terrifying circumstances. I enjoyed the lore that Williams uses, his blend of horror, mystery, and psychological evil and seemingly ‘ordinary’ people. Great dark horrifying read that will satisfy fans of the genre. Adults only due to graphic violence, language, and sexual situations.

I like the fact that “The Shady Corner” by Matthew Williams is a fully-realized horror novel that contains many standard elements and tropes, but is still a fresh story that stands well on its own right and doesn’t feel derivative of others I have read in the genre, which is a nice change. The characters are very well developed, especially David we get a great insight to his evil insanity, and the rest of the characters feel authentic in their own right. The writing is fast-paced and flows well, great dialogue and overall tone. An intriguing, original, haunting, spine tingling-story. Recommend for (adult) fans of horror/suspense.

Everything you could possibly want from a gripping horror novel is found here: solid world building, three dimensional characters (some of whom you love, others whom you hate or are terrified of), high stakes, life and death situations, treachery, evil, and a great supporting cast. The plot moves at a quick pace (considering the plot setup and character backstory necessary in the beginning), there is enough action to keep you invested and intrigued and although there are some deep, dark and evil machinations dotted throughout, it never becomes too much to take---but it gets darn close at times! I found that I was hooked in from the very first page and remained there until I reached the end which is saying something! Even well-read fans of dark horror and suspense are sure to enjoy.

“The Shady Corner” by Matthew Williams is hands down one of the creepiest and darkly riveting books I’ve read in a long time! I was completely drawn in from the opening pages, and thought it seemed really original, even though the whole ‘crazy psycho killer guy’ angle has been done to death, Williams’ buts a cool angle on it where we the readers feel like we never really know what’s up with him, not until the end which was an interesting twist. So it’s not predictable or cliché, which is a relief. We feel transported not only into the various characters’ heads throughout the different experiences and their circumstances—sometimes the worst, most terrifying moments of their lives— dark and quite disturbing at other times. Fast paced and unpredictable.

I just Could NOT put the Book Down!!

By Laurie M. Michalski on July 14, 2008

Format: Paperback

I just spent the whole day on Sunday reading a novel that I thought I could put down, and return to read later, but I could NOT PUT IT DOWN! It was the most mind boggling, want to read more, can't figure out what is going to happen next, gotta know the ending book I have ever read! It was AWESOME! I had thoughts of how this book was going to end, but I was amazed at just how wrong I was after reading the next chapter, it kept me reading and wanting more. The graphics were so explicit, and the horror behind the "MAN" was just so real. The ending is what got me, I had my mind made up what was wrong with David but never would I have ever guessed that it was......read the book and find out for yourself!

Highly recommended

By S. Cooperon July 12, 2008

Format: Paperback

The Shady Corner had me gripped from very the first chapter, and it just got better and better. The author sets the graphic tone for the book straight away, before easing back the horror a little as we are introduced to the characters and back story. With a mix of spine tingling horror, well crafted twists and very graphic death scenes (used sparingly at first, but full blooded by the end - pun intended) we follow the character of David Wilcox through his complex life, where everyone close to him is affected in one way or another.

Disturbingly Good!

By W. Jones on 20 March 2017

Format: Paperback-Verified Purchase

This book really got in my head and I do mean right in there. The character of David Wilcox is superbly written and very dark. Everytime I put the book down he was still in my head, not that I put it down much, I devoured the book in just 3 days. The twists and turns, the horror and the gratifying ending alone make this book good, David's character makes it Great!

The Shady Corner Review

By A. Weeks on 10 August 2008

Format: Paperback

The Shady Corner was gripping from the start and the pace never relented until I had read the final page. Matthew Williams showed he has very powerful ideas and a very good talent for putting those ideas into a well constructed, and exciting written story.

The character and relationship building was written well and, although I had to keep referring back to the timeline to find out exactly where I was in the story, the jump between the present day, the past and the future was handled equally as well.

The plot twists and turns to a crescendo of graphic violence which was well written, so much so that I felt I was there stepping in all the blood and gore myself, very reminiscent of Stephen King. The book climaxes with yet another twist, which clarifies everything that went on before.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and congratulate Matthew on his strong first novel. Well done.

My views

By Ms. L. Andrews on 11 July 2008

Format: Paperback

Kept me gripped all the way through with a huge twist in the story line and explains all at the end. Gruesome in bits but a must for horror fans. The characters are all very believable and it got well and truly under my skin, so much so, that i even doubted the sanity of my 6 yr old son!! Great author, when is the next one out??

Wow

By Mrs. C. Stephenson on 7 July 2008

Format: Paperback

A strong horror/thriller with some gruesome gore and shocks. I had to back track through the time line a few times to keep up with the story (but I suppose thats what it's there for)it certainly doesn't detract from a great novel.
